Battery Export Certifications Explained: UN38.3, CE, UL & IEC

UN38.3 — Transport Safety

Mandatory for shipping lithium cells and batteries by air, sea, rail or road. Covers altitude simulation, thermal, vibration, shock, external short, impact and overcharge tests.

CE — European Market

Indicates conformity with EU directives (typically the Battery Directive / CE marking via EN standards). Required to sell in the EEA.

UL — North America

UL 2054 (battery packs) and UL 1642 (cells) are widely required by US retailers and carriers. Strongly recommended for the North American market.

IEC 62133 — Cell & Pack Safety

The international safety standard for portable sealed cells and batteries, frequently referenced by buyers worldwide.
